The 2003 BioWare role-playing classic, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, is about to be rereleased for the new generation of mobile gamers who never played it back in the days of the original Xbox. Though the original rumor hit the web a week ago thanks to a blurb in an email newsletter, it’s now official, thanks to a new review from IGN.
The site gives the port high marks and an overall rating of 8.8 out of 10, noting that the story and gameplay hold up very well a decade later, and the touch controls suit combat and item management nicely. The only notable drawback the review mentions is the awkward control scheme used to maneuver your protagonist around environments, noting that a virtual joystick scheme might have been preferable to dragging your finger in the direction you wish to go.
Originally released for the XBOX, PC, and Mac, Knights of the Old Republic takes place 4,000 years before the rise of the Empire chronicled in the prequel films, and follows a customizable lead character and their colorful cast of companions on their quest to stop the Sith lord Darth Malak from unleashing chaos on the galaxy. Players can choose to lean towards both the Light and Dark sides of the Force based on actions and choices made over the course of the game, which can affect which Jedi or Sith powers they are able to learn, along with the outcome of the ending.
As of this article’s writing, the game has yet to hit the App Store, but given that IGN got the approval to play the full game and put up a review, its release is likely not far off at all.
