It took a bit longer than normal to capitalize on a viral video like this, but it seems that progress is moving forward on turning Patrick Jean’s three-minute short, Pixels, into a feature-length motion picture, and Harry Potter filmmaker Chris Columbus may be the man to do it.
The original Pixels is about an 8-bit takeover of the world combining CG characters and real world New York footage. How they’re going to stretch that into 87 minutes, I’m not sure, but Tim Herlihy and Tim Dowling, who have collaborated with Adam Sandler on several of his movies like Mr. Deeds and Big Daddy, have been working on it, and it seems that Columbus likes what he’s read. Apparently the story will see a group of characters try to stop the pixelization of the world by some evil nasties, and Sandler, whose production company Happy Madison has the rights to Pixels along with Sony, is looking to make the film his next family film project.
For Columbus, it will be his first film since Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightening Thief, and another chance to build a franchise. Columbus has several different projects in the running, but he may be getting closest to launching the full-length Pixels.
