Comb your mustaches! Super Troopers 2 is coming soon!
Before there was Reno 911, before there was Hot Fuzz, there was Super Troopers. The 2001 comedy about the grandly mustachioed State Troopers of Spurbury, Vermont, became a cult classic thanks to a lot of word of mouth and TV play. And now it’s getting the sequel it truly deserves with Super Troopers 2.
Rumors about Super Troopers 2 have kicking around for awhile now, since Kevin Heffernan, original Trooper and member of the comedy troupe Broken Lizard, hinted at the possibility of it shooting this year. Well, now we have word that the script is done, and the film will being to shoot in preparation for a 2014 release.
In similar Broken Lizard news, the team is preparing for a sequel Beerfest, entitled – oh boy – Weedfest. Heffernan and fellow Lizard Steve Lemme have likewise revealed that the idea, initially a joke, garnered serious interest from famous potheads Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg. So, Broken Lizard have decided to start working on a Weedfest script. We can assume it will follow a similar pattern to Beerfest – which was basically the beer-lympics – but only, you know, with marijuana.
Super Troopers 2 is much closer to production right now, with Weedfest only in the inception stages. As well it should be – I just love Super Troopers. Looking back on it, you can see that it’s a precursor to the Will Ferrell comedies like Talladega Nights or even Anchorman, only – amazingly – a bit more irreverent and potentially offensive. I don’t know how Super Troopers 2 will fare among the fans. It’s been 13 years since the last one, after all, but then again Super Troopers has had a pretty solid afterlife on TV and DVD. No reason to suspect that people can’t get interested in more trooper shenanigans.
Super Troopers 2 is likely to hit theatres sometime in 2014.
