There’s been talk of a sequel to Ridley Scott’s classic sci-fi flick, Blade Runner for years now. It’s had more names attached to it than a census. Christopher Nolan was allegedly up to direct at one point before Scott took back the reins. Original writer Hampton Fancher was in talks to write the follow up and then Contagion‘s Scott Z. Burns was in line. Now it looks like ink is about to be committed to paper as The Wrap reports that Green Lantern scribe Michael Green will pen the script.
Of course, Green might seem like a rather unusual choice. The screenwriter, who has quite the lengthy back catalogue of titles to his name, has carved out a reputation for work of a somewhat different milieu to Blade Runner. Sure, he’s done sci-fi before…for the TV series Heroes, but with the exclusion of Green Lantern, his bread and butter exists solely in the realm of television. His credits range from Sex And The City to Smallville.
Alcon Entertainment and Ridley Scott’s own Scott Free label would not confirm or deny the news that Green is in negotiations. The two houses will produce the film about which very little has been revealed. In May 2012 Scott let slip details which solidified that he’d at least reached a decent outline for the flick. During an interview at that time he announced that there would definitely be a female protagonist. Last year Scott told UK newspaper Metro that he intended to bring Harrison Ford back, despite his age. Ford, of course, played Deckard in the original.
A source over at The Wrap made reference to whether or not the film would be a prequel or sequel. Apparently it will be set some years after the events of the first film. Sounds like a sequel then. Jeez, why can’t they just say that?
