Considering Bond 24 won’t be hitting theaters until 2016, it seemed safe to assume there’d be some time before any supporting actors were nailed down. However, now that Sam Mendes is being brought on for at least one more shot at 007, it looks like the casting process is officially underway and the first fresh face added to the film is Penelope Cruz, who will join the illustrious ranks of actresses who’ve played a Bond girl.
An unnamed source close to the production talked about Cruz’s involvement. Check out that quote below.
“The producers have tried to get Penelope before, but she has never been available because of other commitments. The discussions have been going on for some time and they are working out the contract details now.”
Perhaps Mendes was able to get Cruz on board so early due to his work with her husband, Javier Bardem, who was the villain of Skyfall. We still don’t know anything else about Cruz’s role, and further details probably won’t surface for quite a while.
This also will make Cruz the oldest Bond girl ever. She’s currently 40, and will be 41 by the time filming begins. She’ll snatch the honor (no pun intended) from Honor Blackman, who played Pussy Galore in Goldfinger at the age of 39.
It makes sense to go with an older Bond girl as Daniel Craig is currently 45. Then again, it doesn’t matter how old 007 gets, he’ll always be romancing women in their early 20s, so don’t assume Cruz will be the only romantic interest in the next film.
Cruz is a solid choice for a Bond girl, as she’s both beautiful and talented. Considering her acting skill, it’s likely she’ll have a bigger role than Bérénice Marlohe did in Skyfall, but again, we’ll have to wait on those details.
The report also says that the budget of the film is £100 million, which is less than Quantum of Solace and Skyfall, but hey, what’s a few million here and there?
