After months of rumors and cast speculation, the first on-set photos of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice have surfaced. Based on the novel by Thomas Pynchon, the film follows Joaquin Phoenix through a psychotropic, noir-laden mystery set in late 60’s Los Angeles.

Paul Thomas Anderson is notorious for prolonging the time in which his films move into production, but we’re glad to to see him back on the ball straight after his fantastic 2012 film The Master.

In the set photos we catch our first glimpes of Joaquin Phoenix who plays Doc Sportello, a private investigator preoccupied with his drug use. Also featured in the photos is Maya Rudolph, who’s been rumored to have been given a smaller role as a nurse named Petunia Leeway.

The vibe I’m getting from these pictures is an almost absurdly playful and silly tone compared to The Master and There Will Be Blood. Given the source material though, that isn’t surprising.

What do you think? Do you want to revert back to the tongue in cheek dramedy of the Paul Thomas Anderson’s early career, or have we come to embrace his less humorless works in turn for darker character driven films? After checking out the photos, let us know in the comments below.
