Christoph Waltz has been cast in True Crime, a thriller based on an article by New Yorker writer David Grann, whose writing is becoming quite a hot commodity in Hollywood these days. Grann has several of his articles in development currently, including: The Lost City of Z, The Brand and The Old Man and the Gun.

Brett Ratner and David Gerson have optioned the article, which tells the true story of “a Polish writer who was targeted as the prime suspect in a cold case murder thanks to his novel in which the details of one character’s murder lined up surprisingly well with those of the real case.” Waltz is set to play the detective who “reopens the cold case and becomes entangled in the dark underworld of Poland’s sex rings, prostitution and drugs.”

Though no director is currently attached, Roman Polanski is said to be circling the project, which could make for a reunion between himself and Waltz as the two worked together on Carnage.

Admittedly, I’m not familiar with Grann’s article, but it sure does sound like an interesting story. And with Waltz in the lead role, True Crime has definitely popped onto my radar. It’s hard to go wrong with the actor and even in bad movies (The Green Hornet, The Three Musketeers), he always manages to be an extremely enjoyable screen presence.

Waltz has some very interesting projects lined up for the near future (Candy Store, The Zero Theorem) and True Crime sounds like another excellent career choice for the Academy Award winning actor. We can’t wait to see how this one develops.

Tell us, what do you think of Waltz joining the film? And do you want to see Polanski direct? Let us know in the comments below.
