The latest adaptation of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is headed to the big screen on October 17, 2014. The film has Daniel Radcliffe committed to star as the hunch-backed assistant Igor, but so far no other cast members have been named, and not a ton of information about the plot is known.

The script is penned by Chronicle‘s Max Landis and Radcliffe recently said that while he has heard some speculation about the story, no one seems to have nailed down exactly what Landis’ script entails.

Early descriptions of the script have the story being told from Igor’s perspective, and it sounds like Igor is going to be a very dark, twisted character. One report says he’s pathologically dirty and dressed in old clown’s clothing. Sounds like a wonderfully creepy character to me, and I can’t wait to see how Radcliffe does in the role.

While many stories portray the monster as a misunderstood victim, I’d like to see one iteration where he’s a mindless killing machine. If that film is going to be made soon, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it came from Landis. He has a knack for creating less than integritous main characters, and while that doesn’t work for all stories, the tale of Frankenstein is definitely one where it would.

This isn’t the only version of Frankenstein that will be releasing in 2014. I, Frankenstein, set in a a dystopic present, will hit theaters in January of that year. The two films will likely be very different though, as I, Frankenstein is set in a world where demons and gargoyles battle for ultimate power.

Paul McGuigan is directing, and the film is being released through Twentieth Century Fox. With that release date it’s likely that some other casting will be announced soon, so be sure to check back as we’ll bring you all the news about this project as it comes in.
