With all the hype surrounding this summer’s superhero blockbusters, it’s important not to forget about the sci-fi event of the year. I’m of course talking about Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 follow-up, Elysium. Today, everyone gets a little reminder of how awesome this movie is going to be with the release of the first TV spot.

There isn’t anything too revealing here in terms of the story, and we don’t get that much new footage, unfortunately. Mostly we get to watch Matt Damon gear up for his infiltration of the most heavily guarded place in the universe, with some explosions mixed in. Still, the spot serves as an excellent reminder that this movie shouldn’t be falling off your radar at any point this summer.

You should vividly remember the first trailer for the film. If not, you clearly didn’t see it, because it is absolutely awesome. If the fact Damon and Blomkamp have teamed up wasn’t enough to get you excited, then the trailer should have done the trick. If you’ve somehow missed it, be sure to head over and watch it now.

Part of what’s so exciting about this film is how successful Blomkamp was with District 9. That was made on a relatively low budget by sci-fi standards, so to see what he can do when he has triple the money to work with is very intriguing. Granted, more money doesn’t always equal a better movie, but it usually helps, especially when it comes to sci-fi, and from what we’ve seen so far, Blomkamp’s style hasn’t been compromised.

Elysium hits theaters August 9. In addition to Damon, it stars Jodie Foster, with Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura and Alice Braga in supporting roles.

What do you think of this TV spot for Elysium? Are you as excited for the film as I am? Check it out below and then head to the comments section to share your thoughts.
