When Guardians of the Galaxy was first announced, I started looking forward to watching Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon team up with the likes of Captain America and Iron Man. That’d be totally awesome, huh? Alas, it’s not meant to be. The Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon recently spoke with Bleeding Cool (via /Film), and he said:
We’re following Guardians at Shepperton [Studios, with Avengers 2] but we won’t be swapping cast members. Every movie is its own thing and has to be. Unless I take a lot of peyote and write a very different draft… and I’m not ruling that out.
“It has to be.” His words. Why does it “have to be” that way? Why doesn’t Whedon’s draft for The Avengers 2 feature the Guardians, but somehow plans to include Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch? Sure, whatever he comes up with will be amazing no matter what, but still… it’s rather strange, isn’t it? If that’s the case, how will the Guardians affect the overall story? There are way too many questions, and we’ve been given few answers thus far.
Fear not, though. Perhaps the Guardians won’t appear in The Avengers 2, but I’m sure both parties are bound to interact in some way during Phase 3. Besides, who doesn’t want to see Rocket Raccoon trading quips with Tony Stark, or Gamora going one-on-one against Black Widow? That’s right — everyone wants to see that.
James Gunn is gathering an ensemble of great actors for Guardians of the Galaxy — the film stars Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, and Michael Rooker as Yondu. Lee Pace and Karen Gillan have been cast in unspecified villainous roles, while Glenn Close will play the head of the Nova Corps, and Benicio del Toro may or may not be playing The Collector.
