Silent Hill: Revelation 3D Gets Underway

The horror film Silent Hill is actually getting a sequel, which begins shooting this week in Toronto. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D isn’t so much a sequel, according to a /Film report, but a stand-alone story. It apparently stays truer to its source material (the “Silent Hill” video games) than its predecessor, and will star Adelaide Clemens (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) and Kit Harington.

Michael Bassett is directing this film helmed by producers Samuel Hadida of Davis Films and Don Carmody. The duo produced the original Silent Hill and more recently Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D. The participation of the original team makes me wonder how different this sequel will be from the original. Hadida and Carmody had this to say about the new film, “we will be building on the first film and taking Silent Hill into new territory with an exciting storyline and visuals that should grab both new audiences and fans of the Silent Hill franchise.”

According to the press release, the Silent Hill sequel follows the story of 18-year-old Heather Mason as she and her father run from unknown forces she doesn’t fully understand. Heather, plagued by strange nightmares, begins to make disturbing discoveries when her father disappears…discoveries that may trap her in the demonic world of Silent Hill forever.

In the never-ending line of remakes, reboots and sequels/prequels, here’s another one that makes little to no sense. Based on a series of horror survival video games of the same name, the original Silent Hill performed rather dismally at the box office, and apparently omitted some key characters and components from the game. The story revolved around a strange, eerie town called Silent Hill and a little girl with a haunting connection to the place. With a dismal ending and gamers generally disappointed at the film translation, what kind of reception should Silent Hill: Revelation 3D expect?
