Teen Wolf Review: “Fireflies” (Season 3, Episode 3)

There was a lot of excitement on this episode of Teen Wolf, which isn’t much of a surprise on a show where the compelling motif seems to be ‘go big, or go home.’ You can always expect plenty of blood, death, and extended chase scenes with unnecessary – but much appreciated – gymnast-quality flips.

Teen Wolf has now aired the first quarter of season three, and we are definitely still in the question posing portion of the plot line. So far we have only gained a smidgen of actual information to offset the growing number of unknown possibilities we’ve been presented with.

The first thing that we know for sure is that there is indeed an Alpha pack in Beacon Hills that has come to town presumably for Scott (Tyler Posey). They haven’t made their demands or intentions particularly clear to anyone, but they have started off strong by completely antagonizing the resident Alpha. When Derek (Tyler Hoechlin) thought he had figured out a safe way to extract his two Betas from the equation by breaking into the bank vault, he found that a) Erica (Gage Golightly) was already dead, b) his little sister, Cora (Adelaide Kane) is mysteriously alive and was in Erica’s place, and c) both Cora and Boyd (Sinqua Walls) had been prevented from transforming on the full moon for the last 3 months, which makes for some pretty temperamental werewolves.

Why then would the Alpha pack go through all this extra trouble if their ultimate goal was to either persuade Scott to join their pack, or destroy him. The easy answer is probably just that simple, they have multiple goals. Somehow inciting Derek along the way is also part of their master plan. Cora, unfortunately, is probably just a pawn in it all, but somehow it seems likely that in the end we’ll find out that dear Uncle Peter (Ian Bohen) has something to with it – doesn’t he always end up on the wrong side?

The second thing we now know for sure is that there is someone, or a pack of someones, that is killing virgins. Yes, virgins – and somehow cliché is not a strong enough word to add here. Stiles’ (Dylan O’Brien) missing friend has now been found dead, along with two other victims that all shared the same interesting connection, and all murdered in the same fashion. Stiles described it as human sacrifices, and that is probably dead on – no pun intended.

How do human sacrifices fit into the Alpha pack’s plan? That’s a good question. It doesn’t really seem like their M.O. but then again, there’s still a lot we don’t know about them – or, how they are connected to the high school guidance counselor.
