Fifty Shades Of Grey. The novel which got millions of people visiting their libraries and bookstores much to the chagrin of every other book written…..is hitting the big screen. But you knew that already. Shortlists have been circulating for months now, guessing who’ll take the helm and direct the piece. Atonement‘s Joe Wright was once at the top of that list, Gus Van Sant shot a test reel and Darren Aronofsky turned it down. Now we know who’s landed the gig as Deadline have announced that Sam Taylor-Johnson will be taking on the job.

Taylor-Johnson’s directorial debut was 2009’s Nowhere Boy, which starred her then-future husband, Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The British filmmaker’s addition to the crew will see her join another Briton Kelly Marcel, who penned the script.

If you’ve not heard of the film or the book then we can only assume you’ve been buried inside the complete works of Dickens for the last couple of years. The first novel, Fifty Shades Of Grey by EL James, marked the introduction of one Christian Grey into popular culture. The narrative follows the 27-year old billionaire lothario who ends up wooing (see: shaboinging) a college student, Anastasia Steele.

James will produce the film alongside Dana Brunetti and Michael DeLuca, who said this today following the news:

“Sam’s unique ability to gracefully showcase complex relationships dealing with love, emotion and sexual chemistry make her the ideal director to bring Christian and Anastasia’s relationship to life. EL James’ characters and vivid storytelling require a director who is willing to take risks and push the envelope where needed, and Sam is a natural fit.”

While no-one has been officially cast as Christian Grey, there’ve been a number of candidates rumoured for the part. Just recently, Man Of Steel‘s Henry Cavill was added to the pot. Despite early talk looking to Mr. Taylor-Johnson possibly being linked to the part, it’s now been made clear that he will not be in the running.

The latest rumour around who’ll play the object of Grey’s desire however is just hotting up. Word has it that another Brit, Felicity Jones is being considered. Jones previously starred in Like Crazy and Hysteria, and is currently shooting The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Her involvement is still in the rumour stages so we’ll keep you posted if she signs on.

What do you think of Sam Taylor-Johnson directing Fifty Shades Of Grey? Excited? A little nonplussed? Gutted that Van Sant’s not doing it? Let us know in the comments below.
