Filming has been well underway for director Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, which has allowed us to see little glimpses of what’s going on. There have been plenty of shots of Megan Fox as reporter April O’Neil, as well as a few snaps of Whoopi Goldberg as her boss. We’ve even gotten to see the turtles in their pre-CGI state, i.e. the actors in all their gear that will help the filmmakers render the characters later on.
Today we have a piece of news that should make fans of the franchise very happy. In a recent interview, actor William Fichtner has confirmed that he will be playing the turtles’ arch-nemesis The Shredder in the upcoming film. I wasn’t particularly interested in the project before this point, but now I’m rather intrigued.
Here’s what Fichtner had to say during the interview:
“I play Shredder. It’s cool. It’s one of those things that came along where I thought, ‘Really? Let me think about this for a minute.’ [Laughs] Then I was like, ‘Yeah, OK, this sounds like a journey.’ I’m very glad that it worked out, I’m really glad that I’m doing it.”
Fichtner is a talented actor and tends to make an impact whether the movie he’s in is any good or not. Just in case you’re not familiar with his work, he’s starred in such films as The Dark Knight, Equilibrium, Crash, Black Hawk Down, and Drive Angry.
I’m still a bit hesitant to get my hopes up that TMNT will actually be a good movie, particularly given Megan Fox’s involvement and the fact that Michael Bay is a producer on the project. It also doesn’t help that Liebesman has delivered some pretty bad films in the past, such as Wrath of the Titans and Battle: Los Angeles.
However, as someone who grew up a huge fan of the original animated show and the movies, I’m more than willing to give it a shot in the hopes that it will turn out decent. Hopefully, at the very least, it will result in a nice nostalgic trip down memory lane.
