The original How To Train Your Dragon surprised both for animation and for spectacular depth of character. It was far more than just a rote story about overcoming odds, being true to yourself, etc. As the new teaser for How To Train Your Dragon 2 hits, there’s every chance that the sequel will more than live up to its predecessor.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 picks up with our heroes Hiccup (Jay Baruchel) and his dragon Toothless five years later. The pair have become explorers of the skies, while their friends remain closer to earth, challenging each other to dragon races. When Hiccup and Toothless discover a secret cave that is home to wild dragons, including the mysterious Dragon Rider, they are faced with once more keeping the peace. Sounds like an intriguing plot all around, doesn’t it?
The teaser for How To Train Your Dragon 2 is an elegant, high-flying bit of animation. It relies more on the long takes and breathless dives that made the original so unique and attractive. The plunges through the sky, the facial expressions of Toothless and the melding of dragon and rider make it a beautiful teaser, the sort that we don’t always get to see. Nothing is given away, but it’s a tantalizing glimpse into what the movie will look like. Hiccup has a few more tricks up his sleeve this time, which might indicate the new direction that the film will take. As the last frame proves, puberty has been kind to our dragon rider. I mean: dang.
How To Train Your Dragon 2 does not hit theatres until June 20, 2014, so there’s plenty of time to get excited.
