Nintendo and The Pokemon Company have confirmed that the Skylanders-esk Pokemon Rumble U will launch for the Wii U on August 29th in North America, and on August 15th across Europe.

Similar to the Japanese launch of Pokemon Rumble U last April, the game is being released via the Wii U eShop for $17.99, with the individual NFC Pokemon figures selling exclusively at GameStop for $3.99 each. The entire lineup of launch figures was not announced, however, Nintendo did say that it would be “a random assortment of eighteen… figures, including Pikachu, Victini, Deoxys (Normal Forme), Eevee, and Genesect.”

Using the NFC input on the Wii U GamePad, players can scan the physical Pokemon figures into the game, and make them stronger by using in-game Coins. The other major function of the NFC figures is that they can be used to save game data, which gives players the option to physically take their save files with them.

The best news is that the NFC figures are completely optional and not required to play and enjoy the roster of 649 Pokemon in the game — for those keeping track, this means Pokemon Rumble U includes every single character up through Pokemon Black 2 and White 2.

That is a whole lot of Pokemon!
