Speaking with Total Film at Comic-Con 2013, Joss Whedon opened up a bit more about his upcoming sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron. We’ve been hearing quite a bit about the film lately, considering that it was only recently announced, and today, Total Film released a snippet of their interview with Whedon, which will appear in the next issue of their magazine.

Whedon explains that he was thinking of using Ultron as a villain before he even took on the job of directing The Avengers. He also gives his thoughts on why the character will make for a formidable foe.

Check out his quote below:

“I was pitching Ultron before I took the job on the first movie. I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to do this, but for the second one, you should totally do Ultron.’ Because he’s been a thorn in their side as much as any other character over the years and particularly back in my history. He was great. He’s somebody who can juice things up and he’s a real problem for the Avengers. That’s not always easy to find. It’s not like the Vulture is really going to give them a hard time for 20 minutes.”

Admittedly, I’m not terribly familiar with Ultron or the comic books that he appears in, which is something I’ve stated before. That being said, everything I’m hearing and reading in regards to the character and Whedon’s plans for him sound very intriguing. It will be hard to live up to what we saw in the first film but so far, Marvel has given us no reason to doubt them.

What do you think of Avengers: Age of Ultron so far? Will it live up to the incredible amount of hype that is bound to surround it?
