It’s been a long wait for news regarding BioShock Infinite‘s promised downloadable content, but we can take solace in the fact that the silence has finally been broken.

Irrational Games took to the Internet today, to announce how it will be adding on to the Game of the Year contending shooter with paid content. Said announcement was lengthy and full of information, and revealed a three-part approach, which begins today with the release of Clash in the Clouds.

Priced at five dollars, Clash in the Clouds is said to offer Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC users Horde-like action set within the city of Columbia. Spread over several different maps, its action is survival-based, and tasks players with fighting off fifteen waves of increasingly difficult baddies. As expected, how well one does parlays into the rewards they earn, with earned money able to be spent on additional content like conceptual artwork, character art and Voxophones/Kinetoscopes.

In order to become the king of each scenario, one must strive to perform headshots, chain kills together and complete ‘Blue Ribbon Challenges,’ which up each map’s difficulty factor. An example that was given by Joystiq forces one to fend off a wave of attackers by using only a shotgun.

While Clash in the Clouds will certainly appeal to some, it will probably be looked at as a stop-gap of sorts by others who can take or leave that type of arcade mode. What will surely interest all gamers who bought and loved BioShock Infinite is the second part of today’s reveal, which gave us our first glimpse at Burial at Sea, the first part of a two-part side story.

Developed as brand new single player story content, Burial at Sea and its concluding chapter follow Booker DeWitt to Rapture. Following his arrival in the underwater utopia two years prior to its chronicled disaster, Booker meets a femme fatale version of Elizabeth, who is said to be playable in part two of the narrative.

All three content packs are available as part of the BioShock Infinite Season Pass, which can be purchased for 1600 Microsoft Points ($20 USD). Going that route will offer fans of the series a quality discount, as the two story-based expansions will be priced at $14.99 each.

We’ll keep you updated on this story as it develops in the coming months.
