The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones hasn’t even hit theatres yet (it arrives on August 21st) but the studio, Constantin, is already moving ahead with the sequel, The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes. In fact, not only are they moving ahead with it, but they’re hoping to cast actress Sigourney Weaver in a meaty role.

The role in question is that of the Inquisitor, “the ruthless leader of the Shadowhunters.”  If she signs on, she’ll join a cast of relatively unknown names (Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan and Godfrey Gao). Although, there is some decent talent to be found in the supporting cast (Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Jared Harris and Lena Headey).

Honestly, I’m not too excited about The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. Given the recent track record of YA novel adaptations, films like Beautiful Creatures and The Host, I don’t see much hope for the genre outside of The Hunger Games. I think moviegoers have had enough of their Harry Potters and Twilights and personally, I find it hard to really care for any of the countless YA novels that are currently being adapted.

What do you think? Are you a fan of The Mortal Instruments? Are you happy to see Sigourney Weaver joining the cast of the sequel? Let us know in the comments below.
