As we anxiously await the release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug later this year, we’ve had to make do with the few marketing materials the studio has unleashed thus far.

We’ve already gotten to see an amazing teaser for the film, as well as a few character and set pics. Now that we’re merely a few months away from the film’s release, you can expect to see a lot more, starting with these two new promotional images that have recently been unveiled. They may not be actual stills, but they are intriguing enough to get fans excited for some of the big scenes to come.

First, we have a shot of Bilbo and his Dwarf companions during their infamous escape from the Mirkwood Elves. As we’ve seen from earlier materials, it looks as though they’re changing this scene up a bit from the book. You may recall that the barrels were closed off in the novel. This might make for an exciting scene in the book, but it more than likely wouldn’t translate particularly well to film. It also looks like they’re amping up the action by having our heroes get attacked by arrows during their trip down river.

Second, we have a simple image of Bilbo being reflected in Smaug’s eye, teasing the upcoming confrontation between the two. This is yet another famous scene straight from Tolkien’s novel, one that fans have been waiting for for some time. We’ve already seen brief glimpses of Smaug, but we’ve yet to hear what kind of voice will be given to him by the extraordinary Benedict Cumberbatch (Martin Freeman’s co-star on Sherlock). Chances are, this will be a confrontation to remember, much like Bilbo and Gollum in An Unexpected Journey.

As I mentioned earlier, we’ll probably be seeing a lot more in these last few moths leading up to the release, which will hopefully include another trailer, so be sure to check back often for the latest updates.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters on December 13th.
