Speaking in a recent Famitsu interview, Sony’s least productive freelance contractor, Fumito Ueda, provided yet another non-informative update on the development hell surrounding The Last Guardian. Ueda insisted that the game is still very much in development, but it is not currently a “priority” title for Sony.
“It’s under earnest development. However, SCE Japan Studio, who’s working on The Last Guardian, also has titles like Puppeteer and Knack, and those are only the ones currently announced. Those are taking priority right now.”
Prior to today’s update, the last official news about The Last Guardian came during E3 last June when Sony CEO Jack Tretton stated that the title (which was original announced at E3 2009 and has been in development for over seven years, for Pete’s sake) was “on hiatus.” Sony’s head of worldwide studios, Shuhei Yoshida, later disputed that claim as “misleading,” and said that it was still in “active development.” According to Shuhei, Sony was simply “not [yet] ready to re-introduce it.”
At this point it is impossible to say exactly what is going on with The Last Guardian, but it is hard to imagine that the game is still in development for the PlayStation 3. My best guess is that it has been moved over to the PlayStation 4, but I suspect that we still have a ways to go before it is officially re-debuted.
