Christopher Nolan likes to keep audiences guessing at just what his movies will be about, a trait that puts him alongside J.J. Abrams and, well, pretty much nobody else in modern mainstream movie making. His massive success could be attributed to a perfect storm of talent, ambition, and secrecy surrounding his work, not showing anything until everything is perfect.
That said, part or all of the synopsis for his upcoming Interstellar may have been revealed by the Fort Macleod Gazette, which has a pretty good track record with regards to breaking high-profile news stories. The film is currently shooting in Alberta, where the Gazette is based, so they’ve been given unique access to the set and shooting conditions (watching from the side of the road, basically).
In a recent report (Aug. 28th), they describe the film as:
…A science fiction movie about explorers who travel through a worm hole into another dimension. Set in the future, the movie details the toll climate change has taken on agriculture, with corn the last crop to be cultivated. The scientists embark on a journey through a worm hole into other dimensions in search of somewhere other crops can be grown.
It’s not known where they got this information from, as no source is named and no synopsis has been officially revealed beyond the standard “scientists and wormholes” spiel we’ve been given previously. It certainly is an interesting set-up though – if the film really is about agriculture and the survival of the human race, that sets us up for a Children of Men-style apocalyptic sci-fi, but with corn instead of kids and added intra-dimensional travel. That gravitas, combined with a rumoured $200 million budget, should make you very excited. If not then what’s your problem, man?
Interstellar is released November 2014 and stars Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Anne Hathaway, and Matt Damon.
