Paul Giamatti Thinks The Amazing Spider-Man May Have To Battle The Sinister Six

A lot of speculation has been swirling since the moment Paul Giamatti was announced as Rhino for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with most of it relating to the hope that more villains would lead to the ultimate showdown for Spider-Man: The Sinister Six. In a recent interview Giamatti discussed the subject, and while he made it clear that he doesn’t have any actual knowledge, he believes that the six-member supervillain group will indeed show up at some point in  The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.

The interview was done at TIFF, where Giamatti is promoting his new film Parkland. The interviewer decided to deviate the subject matter slightly though and ask the actor about Spidey.

Here’s what he had to say:

“I believe there’s a lot of stage-setting for the next film. There are several villains in this movie, and some of them are more foreground and important. Jamie Foxx is and stuff. A couple of us are more hanging around the background because I think there will be a bigger deal. I don’t actually know, but that seems to be what they’re doing. I’m not an idiot either, but I can’t claim hard and fast knowledge of this. I won’t. I can’t because I don’t actually know, but you and I can speculate.”

Obviously this is very exciting news for most fans. I don’t think anyone will be upset about seeing the Sinister Six, as long as it’s done well. For that to be the case, there’d have to be at least a couple more films to properly set the stage and provide the motivation for all these supervillains to band together, as supervillains are usually a solitary group.

The announcement of at least two more films in the franchise to follow The Amazing Spider-Man 2, gives Marc Webb the freedom to slowly plant things, as opposed to having to squeeze too many villains into far too few films. It seems he’s looking to create an entire cinematic universe with these films, and that’d be the only way a Sinister Six showdown could properly work.

The way Giamatti is talking here, it sounds like he’s definitely open to the idea of sticking with the franchise long enough to make this work. If his character really is just hanging in the background, it makes sense that something bigger would come along later, especially with an actor like Giamatti in the role. But as he said, all we can do now is speculate.
