Joel Edgerton’s Weirdo Gets New Plot Details

Joel Edgerton has become one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood through a series of awesome supporting and leading performances, so now the question is just what will the Australian actor do next? Well, he's got at least five films lined up for release between now and 2014, but perhaps most exciting is his directorial debut Weirdo. We previously didn't have much in the way of details other than the fact Edgerton is directing, but in a recent interview he revealed some information on the plot for the film, which he also wrote.

Joel Edgerton has become one of the most in-demand actors in Hollywood through a series of awesome supporting and leading performances, so now the question is just what will the Australian actor do next? Well, he’s got at least five films lined up for release between now and 2014, but perhaps most exciting is his directorial debut Weirdo. We previously didn’t have much in the way of details other than the fact Edgerton is directing, but in a recent interview he revealed some information on the plot for the film, which he also wrote.

Edgerton is at TIFF currently for the premiere of Felony, which he wrote and stars in. While there, he was asked about his upcoming film and his answers gave a fair bit of interesting information about the plot.

Check out what he had to say below.

“It’s about a guy who is forced to face the past when it comes back in the form of an old school friend. But he continually lies about it (the past) and it haunts him in a bad bad way.”

Weirdo is a very contained film: five or six locations and six characters. We have people interested in financing subject to casting and we’re playing that game now … I’ll play a supporting role and I will bring the post home.”

While there’s not a ton to go off of there, it still sounds like a very interesting movie, and I can’t wait to see how Edgerton works as a director. He’s obviously an accomplished actor, and has done a fair bit of quality writing too (he wrote The Square), so all that experience should bode well for the transition into directing.

Weirdo is being produced by Rebecca Yeldham, whose other credits include On The Road, The Kite Runner, The Motorcycle Diaries and Anvil: The Story of Anvil. In addition to working on Weirdo, Edgerton is committed to acting in Exodus, The Double Hour, Black Mass, Midnight Special, and Jane Got A Gun.

The film will shoot in California sometime next year. A release date still hasn’t been set but be sure to check back with us as we’ll bring you that information as soon as it comes in.

What do you think of Weirdo? Are you excited to see what Edgerton can do as a director? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below.
