It’s the end of the week, and if you’re anything like me, you’re too broke to be enjoying Grand Theft Auto V for the next 72 hours uninterrupted. If you’re on a budget and looking for some Hollywood-style action, however, you may just be in luck, as 505 Games has announced the release of Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death for XBLA and Steam today.

Developed by ZootFly, Marlow Briggs will follow the titular hero as he attempts to rescue his girlfriend from evil forces centered in Central America. He’s not alone, however, as a talking Mayan death mask joins him on his journey for vengeance. Although the third person hack-and-slash genre has been nearly beaten to death, a corny story and some over the top action could reinvigorate the niche market.

For more information, check out part of the press release below:

Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death is a third person, hack and slash fest. It is perfect for the player who wants to experience a game that brings to life the feel of blockbuster films, over-the-top action and cinematic gameplay with a focus on relentless high-octane combat and danger filled exotic environments.

Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death, developed by ZootFly, is available for the suggested retail price of $14.99 from the Xbox Live Games Store and Windows PC via Steam. The game has  been rated “M” for Mature by the ESRB.

Even though Marlow Briggs hasn’t made a huge splash yet, the trailer looks full of explosive action that’s sure to trigger the adrenaline junky in action fans. It’s not entirely clear in what ways the death mask will come into play, although in my head I can only imagine something similar to Splatterhouse, hopefully with better gameplay.
