In case superheroes were somehow slipping from anyone’s minds following the high-rated premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. this past Tuesday, we’ve got you covered with the first teaser trailer from 2015’s hugely-anticipated sequel Avengers: Age of Ultron. The clip debuted at San Diego Comic Con earlier this year, and grainy copies flooded the web back then, but Marvel has only just officially released the teaser today.

Check it out below:

While the clip, low on footage but high on dramatic voice-overs, may not mean much to the uninitiated, comic-book fans have likely been experiencing some fairly major nerdgasms over it all day. For more information on why, you can head over to our FAQ post about the superhero sequel, but suffice to say that, in the comics, Ultron is one of the Avengers’ most iconic and fearsome adversaries.

A deranged robot with a god complex, Ultron began as a creation by Hank Pym/Ant-Man, though the teaser makes it look like the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the villain will originate with “genius billionaire playboy philanthropist” Tony Stark (aka Iron Man).

Though we have a long time to go until the sequel’s 2015 release date, news of Ultron’s introduction is pretty huge for fans. In the comics, Ultron was basically invincible, with the ability to make upgrades to his own systems whenever he detected any weakness within himself. In the Age of Ulron comic-book arc, the character took over the world and exterminated most of its superheroes before being destroyed through the combined efforts of Wolverine, Iron Man and the Invisible Woman. As two of those three characters are currently owned by studios other than Marvel, Whedon’s film will not be a straight adaptation of the storyline, but Age of Ultron‘s megalomaniacal version of the villain certainly gives an indication as to the level of chaos filmgoers will see in the film.

Are you excited for Avengers: Age of Ultron, or are you starting to suffer from superhero fatigue, brought on by Marvel’s steady stream of films and recent leap to TV? Let us know in the comments section!

Avengers: Age of Ultron blasts into theaters on May 1st, 2015.
