It took me a while to get on board the Beauty and the Beast bandwagon this season. With all the major plot and character changes that took place over the summer, I was hard-pressed to simply accept them at face value. Although they “fixed” some of the bigger issues we saw during season 1, I thought they also took away some of what had attracted fans to the series in the first place.
No matter which way you try to spin it, the underlying theme of Beauty and the Beast is the relationship between Catherine (Kristen Kruek) and Vincent (Jay Ryan) – an unlikely couple that beats all the odds. Just like in the fairy tale, right?
Granted, The CW’s version of the classic tale had to take a substantial number of creative liberties in order to translate the Disney story we all loved growing up into this modern-day New York backdrop, but the premise is still the same. Which is why it was even more of a surprise when we reunited with our star-crossed lovers this season to find a sleep-deprived, tunnel vision version of Cat, and a Vincent that didn’t remember she existed.
The first few episodes of season 2 of Beauty and the Beast established the new rules for the show, along with the who, what, where, when, and why that we needed to catch us up on how our favorite characters spent their summer vacation. But, this was the first time that we saw a real glimmer of the couple we watched fall in love last season. I have to say that I am really digging the fact that we have a front row seat to watch it happen all over again, and this time with a whole new set of complications.
Whether you supported Vincent’s drastic change in behavior this season or not, you were probably still glad to see his softer side start to emerge. In this episode of Beauty and the Beast, Vincent and Cat are on the same side, just like old times, and they still make a pretty good team. Although their dynamic is clearly altered, there is still a sense of familiarity about the pair that is exactly what I’ve been looking for.
