As David Fincher inches his way to completing his adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, another Flynn adaptation has just been completed. The film version of the author’s sophomore novel, Dark Places, stars Charlize Theron and comes to us courtesy of director Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key). Today, we have the first image from the project, featuring its star looking just a bit rough and tumble in the lead role.

In the film, Charlize Theron plays Libby Day, a woman who at the age of seven witnessed her family’s massacre, testifying against her brother as the murderer. Now grown up, Libby has to field questions from The Kill Club, a group obsessed with notorious crimes, bringing back the horrific moments as they hope to find proof that will exonerate her brother. Libby meanwhile hopes to turn a profit from the club, agreeing to investigate the massacre and return to the scene of the crime.

Until now I had not really paid much attention to this adaptation of Flynn’s sophomore novel as the film has been overshadowed by Fincher’s roundabout work on Gone Girl. Now that I’ve read more about Dark Places though, I can safely say that the story seems like an intriguing one. While this first image from the film is nothing but Theron looking a bit tough and moody, the project does sound promising.

Dark Places is currently being shopped around for an American distributor. Given the high profile status of the star, and the current cinematic interest in Flynn’s work, it should not have much difficulty getting distribution. This means that we can probably expect to see both Gone Girl and Dark Places in cinemas within the next year.

You can check out the first image from Dark Places below and let us know what you think about the image, and the story, in the comments. Sound like an enjoyable few hours in a darkened cineplex?
