Due to creative differences, director Scott Cooper will no longer helm his planned adaptation of The Stand, based on Stephen King’s epic novel about a virus that wipes out 99% of the population and the remaining survivors who find themselves separated into two warring factions.

Cooper now joins a long list of directors who have been unable to tackle King’s work, the most recent of which was Ben Affleck, who was also having a hard time with it. No replacement director has been chosen just yet but the project does remain a priority for Warner Bros., as they don’t have the rights to the novel for that much longer.

Though it’s too bad that Cooper had to depart, the in-demand director has no shortage of projects to choose from for his next film. And, with Out of the Furnace building a lot of buzz right now, you can be sure that the offers will keep piling up for the talented filmmaker.

Tell us, are you sad to see Scott Cooper leave The Stand? Are you familiar with King’s novel? Let us know in the comments section below. And be sure to check back next week for our exclusive interview with Cooper as we discuss his new film Out of the Furnace with him.
