Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, director of 28 Weeks Later, has signed on to direct the upcoming remake of The Crow. The film will be a “re-invention” of the 1994 classic that starred Brandon Lee. In addition to directing, Fresnadillo will “collaboratively develop the script once a writer is attached to adapt the screenplay.” Does this mean the Nick Cave version of the script is gone? Most likely.
The original version of The Crow wasn’t a bad film but was probably most well known for being the setting of star Brandon Lee’s death (due to an accidental gunshot on set). I liked the movie, but didn’t love it. That being said, it did well enough with critics and at the box office. It also has quite a large legion of fans and managed to spawn a few sequels.
As for Fresnadillo, I’ve seen 28 Weeks Later and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. I have no problem with him taking on The Crow. In fact, it’ll be interesting to see where his vision takes it.
