We aren’t far off now from seeing Herge’s classic comic book hero, Tintin, being incarnated onscreen in 3D motion capture in The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, which is expected to debut in the US at Christmas. However, we are even further away from seeing the sequel, as you may already know the plan is for there to be a Tintin trilogy which is being overseen by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. Spielberg has directed the first film and Jackson will direct the second, and due to various commitments it would appear that production wouldn’t get started for a while.
However in an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live broadcaster Richard Bacon, British author Anthony Horowitz has confirmed that he is writing the second film:
I’m working in Hollywood at the moment, I’m writing a feature film even as we speak. I’ve been hired to write Tintin… if [the first] film is a success and works and gets an audience, I’m writing the sequel to it, Prisoners of the Sun which Peter Jackson is going to direct.
So big news on all fronts, the film will be an adaptation of the Prisoners of the Sun which is arguably the most well known of the books outside of the fan base. Horowitz is a British author who perhaps best known internationally for writing the Alex Rider spy books which were adapted into a thoroughly crap movie called Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker. However more appropriately he was a writer for TV on Midsomer Murders for the first series and he is a very plot driven writer which is perfect for Tintin.
This is however a long way off, Spielberg is not directing the next movie as after War Horse he has Robopocalypse and Lincoln. And Peter Jackson is going to be caught up on a little film called The Hobbit. So the sequel is a long way off but you can look forward to the first film: The Adventures of Tintin The Secret of the Unicorn which is to be released on December 25th.
