As the flagship programs of television network AMC have either finished in grand style (Breaking Bad) or began to wind down into their final episodes (Mad Men), TV viewers are curious to see which new programs the company will unleash next. Today, AMC has released a first look at Turn, a historical drama set in the years after the American Revolutionary War. The drama is set to air in spring 2014 and the early footage certainly looks promising.
Based on a true story that was chronicled in Alexander Rose’s history book Washington’s Spies, Turn stars Jamie Bell as Abe Woodhull, a farmer in British-occupied Rhode Island who banded together with other Rebels to form a group of spies. This collective, known as The Culper Ring, would turn the tide of the war and fight for American independence in the colony. The Culper Ring also pioneered many of the espionage tricks that American agencies would later use.
The series comes from showrunner Craig Silverstein (Nikita) and directing the pilot is Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes). There is a considerable amount of talent involved here and the small bursts of footage from the teaser look great, with superb period details and intense battle violence. With the success of period-bending network drama Sleepy Hollow, I think that audiences may be captivated by Turn as well, as it’s another series set in Colonial America and during a time of revolutionary war.
It will also be nice to see Bell take the lead role here, as he is a reliable young actor and has shown a stoic and determined side in the past with period dramas like Flags of Our Fathers and The Eagle. I’m confident that he could lead a series like Turn and am excited to see him do so.
