One of the first steps in what may become a vast expansion of Warner Bros.’ DC universe is the announcement of Gotham, a new Fox television show focused on Commissioner James Gordon back when he was a rookie detective. We heard right off the bat that the Caped Crusader wouldn’t be featured, but today we have news that a young Bruce Wayne will be a series regular.

This news comes from a casting website that posted what Fox is looking for. Check out the casting description below.

A 10-year-old Bruce Wayne is among the roles that are now being cast as series regulars on the upcoming Fox TV series “Gotham” which explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham City famous. Under development for over a year, the project has now been given a direct-to-series order by the network, which won an intense bidding war for the Warner Bros. Television rights to the show. Shooting on the pilot episode will get underway in March, 2014 and will center on Gotham City PD rookie homicide detective James Gordon who investigates the double murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

It’s been rumored that the first episode of the series will focus on Gordon investigating the murder of the Waynes, so it makes sense that their son would be involved. We haven’t seen much of this point in Bruce Wayne’s life before, at least not in anything live-action, so it’ll be interesting to see how Bruno Heller and the rest of the creative team handle the character.

It’s fairly safe to assume that the actor who plays this prepubescent Wayne will be relatively unknown. There just aren’t that many actors that young who are well-established. I looked through the lists of actors born between 2001 and 2003, and no one stood out to me as even a slight possibility, except for maybe Max Charles. He already got to play a young Peter Parker though, so that’d be too many awesome characters for one 10-year-old to handle.

The extended description also says that no characters have been cast for the show yet. Obviously the biggest choice is who will play Gordon but there’s also the wide array of villains to speculate on as well. Let’s just say that this should be a fun one to watch develop.

The pilot is supposed to begin shooting in March of 2014, so you can be sure that we’ll be hearing more Gotham news in the coming months. When we do, we’ll let you know.
