First Jupiter Ascending Trailer Lands On The Web

With the box office failure of Cloud Atlas, some were a bit surprised that the Wachowskis were able to get the money to make a science fiction blockbuster like Jupiter Ascending so quickly afterward. Still, with a premise that's more action sci-fi than passion sci-fi, it doesn't seem like Warner Bros. is taking as much of a risk as some originally thought. Plus, if today's first trailer is any indication, there should be no trouble getting people into theaters for this one.

With the box office failure of Cloud Atlas, some were a bit surprised that the Wachowskis were able to get the money to make a science fiction blockbuster like Jupiter Ascending so quickly afterward. Still, with a premise that’s more action sci-fi than passion sci-fi, it doesn’t seem like Warner Bros. is taking as much of a risk as some originally thought. Plus, if today’s first trailer is any indication, there should be no trouble getting people into theaters for this one.

Prior to today, there’s been a relative lack of promotion so far. Usually we’ll have a fair share of images and posters before the first trailer, but there hasn’t been much to build any sort of hype for this film other than the names of the cast members and the ambitious story. For those who aren’t familiar with said story, check out the official synopsis below.

Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under a night sky, with signs predicting that she was destined for great things.  Now grown, Jupiter dreams of the stars but wakes up to the cold reality of a job cleaning other people’s houses and an endless run of bad breaks.  Only when Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered ex-military hunter, arrives on Earth to track her down does Jupiter begin to glimpse the fate that has been waiting for her all along—her genetic signature marks her as next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

This trailer doesn’t give much insight into the plot, but it definitely is something to look at. The visuals are incredible, especially once Jupiter is pulled off Earth. If nothing else, this film will be worth watching for its stunning effects, which are shown best in the action sequences of the trailer.

Really though, it’s the cast that has me thrilled. There are a lot of actors here who don’t have much sci-fi experience but have the potential to thrive in the genre. Personally, as much as I enjoy Tatum and Kunis, I’m really excited for Tuppence Middleton and Eddie Redmayne. Both Brits are rising actors that I like more with each role, and they are both great in their limited appearances in this trailer.

Anyway, enough reading what I have to say about the trailer. Check it out below, and then head on down to the comments to share your thoughts on Jupiter Ascending.
