Deadline is bringing us news today on Matt Reeves‘ next film. The Cloverfield and more recently Let Me In director has chosen to return to sci-fi and will be adapting Ray Nelson‘s short story 8 O’Clock In The Morning, which served as the basis for John Carpenter‘s They Live. Reeves will be writing his own script and he’s made it clear the the film won’t simply be a remake of Carpenter’s version. In fact, Reeves will be ditching most of the plot elements from They Live in order to provide his own take on the short story.

“I saw an opportunity to do a movie that was very point-of-view driven, a psychological science fiction thriller that explores this guy’s nightmare,” Reeves told Deadline. “There could be a desperate love story at the center of this. Carpenter took a satirical view of the material and the larger political implication that we’re being controlled. I am very drawn to the emotional side, the nightmare experience with the paranoia of ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ or a Roman Polanski-style film.”

I’m not familiar with the short story or with They Live so I can’t comment on the source material but I have seen Cloverfield and Let Me In, and enjoyed both very much, so I’m looking forward to see what Reeves does here. He’s still scripting it so it will be a while before it goes into production. I’ll be keeping my eye on it though and as always, we’ll keep you posted on anymore news surrounding it.
