Boba Fett Spinoff Film In The Works, Lawrence Kasdan Will Write It

Now that we've all recovered from our New Year's hangovers, we can get down to the really important things: potential Star Wars spinoff rumors. While speculation continues to be rife about 'who will play who' in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII (and by 'upcoming' I really mean 'more than a year away'), we should also turn our attention to those spinoff films that will be in the pipeline following the arrival of Episode VII.

Now that we’ve all recovered from our New Year’s hangovers, we can get down to the really important things: potential Star Wars spinoff rumors. While speculation continues to be rife about ‘who will play who’ in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII (and by ‘upcoming’ I really mean ‘more than a year away’), we should also turn our attention to those spinoff films that will be in the pipeline following the arrival of Episode VII.

Rumors have been abundant over who will get their own origin stories, but the most likely candidates right now are Han Solo and Boba Fett (possibly even in the same film?). Director Jon Schnepp recently made the claim that Boba Fett was indeed on the dock for a spinoff film, and that Lawrence Kasdan himself is planning to write it. Here’s what Schnepp said:

One of [the Star Wars spinoffs] is Boba Fett. It is. I know. I know for a fact. I will never reveal my source, but it is the one written by Lawrence Kasdan.

We all remember that Kasdan co-penned both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, and also has his hand in the Episode VII script, so it is not much of a surprise that he’s going to be behind another Star Wars spinoff.

Disney and Lucasfilm will carry on with their intentions to make one Star Wars film a year, presumably until the movie-going public begins sobbing for them to stop. While there’s little doubt that Episode VII will make a mint at the box office, I wonder whether the brand can sustain itself into a number of origin stories. Although I might have some interest in learning about the trials and tribulations of young Han Solo, Boba Fett’s popularity as a character remains a confusing mystery to me.

Nothing will stop Disney, however, short of the total failure of one or more Star Wars films at the box office. That seems like an unlikely scenario, so my only recommendation is to embrace the inevitable and pray for the tale of young Yoda.

Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theatres on December 18, 2015. The Boba Fett film, if it happens, will probably come shortly thereafter.
