Rupert Wyatt is putting together an impressive cast for his upcoming film The Gambler. So far, he has Mark Wahlberg and Brie Larson in the lead roles with Michael K. Williams and Jessica Lange supporting. Now, according to The Wrap, Wyatt and Paramount have brought in John Goodman to round out the line-up.
For those who aren’t familiar with the original, it followed a “UCLA literature professor with a gambling problem who runs afoul of gangsters, until borrowing from his girlfriend and mother eventually gets the gangsters after the ones he loves, putting himself and his loved ones in danger.” As for Goodman, he’s set to play a Jewish loan shark who lends Wahlberg’s character money.
With a script from The Departed scribe William Monahan, I’m really hoping that the film doesn’t turn out to be as generic as it sounds. There’s certainly a ton of talent on board and now with Goodman having signed on, the cast is especially strong. Plus, Rupert Wyatt was pretty high in demand after Rise of the Planet of the Apes and I can’t imagine that he would choose a project with a weak script. Unfortunately, until we see some footage though, we won’t know what type of ride we’re in for.
