Today was a big news day for FX. Not only did they confirm during their TCA press event that Justified will be wrapping up after its sixth season and announce a new TV pilot from screenwriter Charlie Kaufman starring Michael Cera and John Hawkes, but they also revealed that their recent development deal with Louis C.K. will be coming to fruition with a new pilot starring Zach Galifianakis.
That’s two of the most brilliant minds in comedy working together on a new show, and what are the odds that the result will be anything other than awesome? Both comics have become immensely popular over the last few years. Louis C.K. with the critical success of his FX show Louie and Galifianakis with the box office success of the Hangover movies, and also with editors who like to make their writers sweat by making them spell “Galifianakis” numerous times in the same article.
While Galifianakis has become a big-screen star, it wasn’t too long ago that he was acting on the small screen for HBO’s underrated and prematurely-canceled Bored to Death. His work on that show was pretty stellar, and if he can bring that same level of quality to the new pilot, there’s little reason to think that it won’t make it to series. With It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia having been shipped over to sister network FXX, FX’s comedy lineup needed another hit and this one seems like a pretty good candidate.
Unfortunately, there isn’t much in the way of details on the new show yet other than the involvement of the aforementioned comics. No title has been unveiled nor is it known when it may see the light of day, but it is at the very least something fans of comedy have to look forward to in the near future. Before that happens, though, we’ll be seeing a new season of Louie, which returns to FX in May.
