Paul Rudd & Amy Poehler Are Feisty Fiction Lovers in First Clip And Poster From They Came Together

Paul Rudd is one of the most likeable comic actors of our generation, and Amy Poehler is the reigning queen of TV comedy after being not just a hilarious co-host at this Sunday’s Golden Globes, but also picking up a trophy for her work on Parks and Recreation. Now, the two are jetting off to Park City, Utah for the premiere of their new comedy, They Came Together. The film will reunite the actors, who are formerly members of the Camp Firewood gang, with their Wet Hot American Summer director David Wain.

With two weeks to go before its closing night premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the first clip and poster from They Came Together has arrived online today. Neither are supposed to be taken at face value though, since they poke fun at the artificiality of the romantic comedy genre, which the film will skewer. Rudd plays Joel, an executive for a big candy store chain, while Poehler is Molly, the owner of a more modest sweet shop.

As the synopsis suggests, They Came Together is a parody of formulaic romantic comedies a la You’ve Got Mail; appropriately, the clip takes place at a small bookstore. While Rudd and Poehler’s characters begin the scene by sniping at each other, they end up finding a common ground: a love for fiction. The stilted line delivery and banal dialogue is hopefully not an indication of the film’s overall quality, but likely suggests that this will be a spot-on spoof of tired romantic comedy conventions.

Meanwhile, the film’s poster is a parody of terribly photoshopped one-sheets, with its cliched New York skyline playing over a bland photograph of the main actors. Also, that tagline is cheesy and awful, but in the most wonderful way, and the pokes at Deadline.com are pretty amusing. As the poster makes clear, Ed Helms co-stars in the film, alongside Max Greenfield, Christopher Meloni, Cobie Smulders, Teyonah Parris, Ken Marino and Michael Ian Black.
