In this week’s episode of Girls, titled “She Said OK,” Adam gives Hannah a birthday gift of a necklace with a tooth on it. “It’s either mine or Caroline’s,” he tells her about the tooth. “My mother put them in the same box.”
That pretty much sums up our introduction to Caroline, Adam’s clearly mentally unstable sister. She shows up out of nowhere, insinuates herself into Adam and Hannah’s relationship almost immediately (and despite Adam’s protestations) and just as quickly starts causing trouble for the show’s characters, even beyond Adam and Hannah. By the end of the episode it’s clear that Hannah can’t have Adam without getting some Caroline with him, right down to the tooth included in her birthday present.
Caroline introduces herself to Hannah’s father by kissing him on the mouth, which is pretty inappropriate but not too left field for the world of social awkwardness that Girls inhabits. Things take a turn for the crazy, though, when she sets her sights on Ray and, after being rebuffed by him, bites him on the arm.
Poor Ray. He probably gets it worst out of any character this episode. After the biting incident and the most awkward interaction with Shoshanna that he possibly could have had, Ray lets his anger get the better of him and confronts Hannah’s boss for having the gall to turn off a Smashing Pumpkins song that he had requested from the DJ. Eagle-eyed viewers might have noticed earlier on that Ray’s own boss (played by comedian Colin Quinn), who is apparently dying of some terminal disease which he has so far been unwilling to indulge the specifics of to Ray, was wearing a Smashing Pumpkins t-shirt. It would seem that Ray is in early mourning for his boss, who is somewhat of a father figure to him and perhaps the one person who sees Ray’s potential, the potential that Shoshanna did not see.
“It’s not fair to end things in the middle,” Ray yells during the altercation. He could be talking about his boss’s illness, or he could be talking about his relationship with Shoshanna. Most likely, whether he is aware of it or not, he is talking about both of those things.
We certainly see a different side of Hannah’s boss, who shows up to the party clearly under the influence of some sort of drug and demands water and the use of Hannah’s phone so he can use Grindr on it. The man obviously has some issues going on, and the chances that those issues won’t impact Hannah more in future episodes are probably pretty slim.
