The LEGO Movie Already Has A Sequel In Development

It might not be hitting theatres until this Friday, but already the general consensus seems to be that The LEGO Movie is the first great film of 2014. Not only that, but some critics are also calling it an early frontrunner for Best Animated Feature at next year's Oscars. Things really seem to be looking up for the film and now, thanks to the early positive buzz, Warner Bros. is putting a sequel into production, with The Internship scribe Jared Stern set to pen the script.

It might not be hitting theatres until this Friday, but already the general consensus seems to be that The LEGO Movie is the first great film of 2014. Not only that, but some critics are also calling it an early frontrunner for Best Animated Feature at next year’s Oscars. Things really seem to be looking up for the film and now, thanks to the early positive buzz, Warner Bros. is putting a sequel into production, with The Internship scribe Jared Stern set to pen the script.

Considering that the film is tracking extremely well, I’d imagine that it will make more than enough money to justify a follow-up. The LEGO Movie has mass appeal based on the LEGO brand alone, but the added combination of its all-star cast (which includes Chris Pratt, Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks and Will Ferrell) and overwhelmingly positive word of mouth should ensure that the animated flick takes the top spot at the box office this weekend. If it doesn’t, I’ll be completely shocked.

I’ll be the first to admit that I was a bit hesitant about The LEGO Movie back when I first heard about the project, and the barrage of promotional material leading up to its release hadn’t done a lot to win me over. Now, however, after hearing about how much critics love the finished product, I’m certainly more inclined to check it out. Hopefully, The LEGO Movie will live up to the lofty expectations that early critics are already setting for it once the rest of the reviews and the box-office receipts come in.

The LEGO Movie opens this Friday, February 7. Tell us, are you surprised to hear that a sequel is already in production? Are you planning on checking out this animated adventure, or are you still not sold on the film?
