Though it hasn’t been long at all since the release of Sonic Lost World, Sega has already revealed that the next major installment in their iconic Sonic the Hedgehog series is in the works, and it looks to be mixing things up a bit. Titled Sonic Boom, this latest entry will, much like Lost World and Sonic Colors, simultaneously release two separate versions exclusively on Nintendo consoles, in this case the Wii U and 3DS.
Made to serve as a tie-in prequel to the upcoming CG Cartoon Network series of the same name announced back in October, Sonic Boom will not actually be developed in-house at Sega. Instead, development of the Wii U version will be handled by fledgling developer Big Red Button Entertainment, while the 3DS version will be made by Sanzaru Games, best known for Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time.
Gameplay, at least for the Wii U version, will apparently revolve around the four familar faces of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, all of whom have had redesigns to various degrees. Those who may cry foul at the sight of Knuckles becoming a towering muscled figure shouldn’t panic yet, though, as Sega of America president John Chen confirmed that, “Sonic Boom will not be replacing the original franchise.”
