Die Hard director John McTiernan has lined up his first film following his 12-month prison sentence, as Variety reports that he’ll helm the DEA thriller Red Squad. Penned by Cam Cannon and Jorge Suarez, the plot will center on a “former DEA agent with a rogue streak and his select team of mercenaries who descend upon a Mexican border town to neutralize a drug lord.” Sure, it sounds a bit generic but seeing as McTiernan has more than proven himself in the genre, I don’t think we have anything to worry about.
Of course, by now most people are familiar with the director’s story, and how he served a year in prison for lying to a federal officer. It led to Hollywood essentially shunning him and most of the projects that he was developing at the time getting abandoned, with several producers even going so far as to file lawsuits.
The whole thing was quite controversial at the time and whether you agree with how it all played out or not, it’s nice to see that the filmmaker isn’t letting his legal troubles hold him down. McTiernan still has a fiercely loyal fanbase and you can bet that many people will be very excited to hear that he’s all set to direct again once he’s released from prison this April.
