Kevin Feige Talks Black Widow’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron Role, Solo Film Possible

With Black Widow's inclusion in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and her complicated history with the titular villain, fans were sure that we were finally going to dive into her backstory after getting small snippets of it in The Avengers. However, according to Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige, that may be saved for Joss Whedon's upcoming team-up sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron and eventually in a solo film of her own. Feige recently talked with Total Film about her future in the Marvel cinematic universe, and from what he says we can assume that Black Widow will have a more substantial role in the films going forward.

With Black Widow’s inclusion in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and her complicated history with the titular villain, fans were sure that we were finally going to dive into her backstory after getting small snippets of it in The Avengers. However, according to Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige, that may be saved for Joss Whedon’s upcoming team-up sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron and eventually in a solo film of her own. Feige recently talked with Total Film about her future in the Marvel cinematic universe, and from what he says we can assume that Black Widow will have a more substantial role in the films going forward.

“Black Widow’s whole arc [in The Winter Soldier] is coming to terms with her history – that she’s been a spy, and spies aren’t necessarily trustworthy… We start filming the next Avengers film at the end of March, Widow’s part in that is very big. We learn more about her past and learn more about where she came from and how she became in that film. The notion of exploring that even further in her own film would be great, and we have some development work with that.”

The Winter Soldier marks Scarlett Johansson’s third appearance as the character so far, debuting in Iron Man 2 before teaming up with the rest of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers. It’s nice to hear that Feige has big plans for her character, and that we may finally see a solo film featuring a superheroine. Considering how expansive the MCU is, it’s a shame there has yet to be a single film with a female lead. Whether or not Black Widow is the right character to give that film to (as opposed to other popular characters like the much-talked-about Ms. Marvel) is another story.

There’s been talk of a Black Widow solo film ever since her appearance in Iron Man 2, so hearing that one is in development is nothing new. Judging by a bigger role moving forward, as well as finally telling us some of her backstory, Marvel may finally be laying the groundwork for that to happen.

Tell us, are you interested in a Black Widow solo film? What do you think of her getting a bigger role to play in Avengers: Age of Ultron? Let us know in the comments below.
