Are Benedict Cumberbatch And Gary Oldman Confirmed For Star Wars: Episode VII?

At this point, it's not even worth the time or energy to post a Star Wars: Episode VII rumor, yet here I am writing another one up. Why, you ask? Well, because this one is actually quite exciting, despite the fact that it may not be true. What we're hearing today is that Benedict Cumberbatch and Gary Oldman, two actors who have been heavily rumored for roles in the film, are now attached in some capacity.

At this point, it’s not even worth the time or energy to post a Star Wars: Episode VII rumor, yet here I am writing another one up. Why, you ask? Well, because this one is actually quite exciting, despite the fact that it may not be true. What we’re hearing today is that Benedict Cumberbatch and Gary Oldman, two actors who have been heavily rumored for roles in the film, are now attached in some capacity.

The news comes to use from MarketSaw, who originally broke the news that Lucasfilm was planning a new trilogy. In their report they note that Ford, Hamill and Fisher are all set, as are Billy Dee Williams, Ian McDiarmid, Anthony Daniels and Warwick Davies. Most of this was already assumed, but it’s still nice to hear another source corroborating it. The most interesting part though is what I mentioned above, and that is their comment about Oldman and Cumberbatch, which you can check out below:

“I believe Cumberbatch and Oldman were pursued for the same role. I don’t know how that will work out with the script changes, but I’m told they are both involved.”

That’s not all though, MarketSaw also says that they’ve seen an early version of the script. Luckily for us, they’ve provided some details:

“Ultimately it’s about twins, and which will take a path towards darkness and which will follow in their father’s footsteps, or at least that is what it used to be, that may come later as I think changes are being undertaken to bring the original cast into the forefront of the story leading to ramifications that lead up to the next generation of Skywalkers.”

Again though, that’s based on an early version of the script and we know that the story has undergone several major changes, so who knows if what’s being described above is accurate. Plus, this can all just be filed under the rumor category at this point as nothing has been officially confirmed.

Still, it’s very exciting to think that both Benedict Cumberbatch and Gary Oldman might be showing up in the film and the fanboy inside of me certainly hopes that there’s some truth to this latest Star Wars: Episode VII rumor.

Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ll be hearing anything official until the Summer, perhaps at Comic-Con, so for now I wouldn’t hold my breath. That being said, both Cumberbatch and Oldman have been heavily rumored over the last couple of months and so, I am slightly inclined to believe this particular piece of news. Fingers crossed!
