We’re The Millers 2 Is Happening, With Writer Adam Sztykiel Attached

After New Line's raunchy road comedy We're the Millers became one of the biggest box office surprises last summer, it's no surprise that the studio is interested in following the future adventures of former drug dealer David Clark (Jason Sudeikis) and the oddball fake family he assembled in the film to help him smuggle a large amount of pot across the Mexican border into America. Now, We're the Millers 2 (not the official title) has been officially confirmed, with news that New Line has attached Adam Sztykiel to pen the script.

After New Line’s raunchy road comedy We’re the Millers became one of the biggest box office surprises last summer, it’s no surprise that the studio is interested in following the future adventures of former drug dealer David Clark (Jason Sudeikis) and the oddball fake family he assembled in the film to help him smuggle a large amount of pot across the Mexican border into America. Now, We’re the Millers 2 (not the official title) has been officially confirmed, with news that New Line has attached Adam Sztykiel to pen the script.

Sztykiel is best known for writing Due Date, a 2010 comedy which starred Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. That’s not great news, considering that Due Date‘s script was the film’s weakest link, providing only a few laughs while stranding its stars with minimal character development and a painfully derivative plot. Sztykiel also directed a middling Patrick Dempsey comedy called Made of Honor. So why are New Line placing the sequel to last summer’s hit in his hands? Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that he has an NBC comedy in the works called Undateable, or maybe the writer just impressed the right people over at the studio.

Either way, director Marshall Thurber and cast members Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts and Will Poulter are all expected to return for the sequel, which is very good news. The best part of We’re the Millers was definitely the hilarious interactions between the lead cast members, so getting more of that is fine by me.

Hopefully Sztykiel gets his head around the characters so he doesn’t end up delivering an inferior follow-up. If We’re the Millers 2 takes off at the box office (and positive word-of-mouth is a huge part of that), we could easily be looking at a franchise, given how well the first film did. Made for less than $40 million, it grossed $150 million in the U.S. alone, and $270 million worldwide. No wonder New Line is so psyched about the prospect of a sequel.
