Sin City: A Dame To Kill For has been a long time coming. Graphic novel author Frank Miller began working on the script just a year after Sin City hit the big screen in 2005. He talked about it at every opportunity, too – most notably in 2007, 2011, and again in the summer of 2012. Cameras finally began to roll in October of 2012 and now, seventeen months later, we have a real trailer.
The script – written by co-directors Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez, with screenwriter William Monahan – is based on Miller’s ‘A Dame To Kill’ and ‘Just Another Saturday Night’, with two original Miller stories added in exclusively for the film. Several cast members are returning – including Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King and Powers Boothe – while some new characters have been added to the mix as well. Joining the population of this dark and corrupt town are Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eva Green, Juno Temple, Ray Liotta, Stacy Keach and Lady Gaga.
Some substitutions are also being made for the sequel. Josh Brolin will replace Clive Owen as Dwight – a private investigator-turned vigilante and one of the main characters in ‘A Dame To Kill For’. For Dwight, that story (according to the graphic novels) is a prequel to the events in Sin City. Dennis Haysbert steps in for the late, great Michael Clarke Duncan to play Manute, the gentlemanly homicidal maniac who is almost indestructible. Finally, Jeremy Piven will replace Michael Madsen in the role of Bob – former partner of Detective Hartigan (played by Bruce Willis).
Originally rumoured to be due for release on October 4th, 2013, it soon transpired that Robert Rodriguez was simply holding that date for Machete Kills. Instead, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will roar into US cinemas on August 22nd, and into UK cinemas on August 29th, 2014.
