Joe Cornish Will Helm Section 6 For Universal

The search for a director for Universal's red-hot spy thriller, Section 6, has now come to an end. After looking at names like David MacKenzie and Tom Hooper, the studio has settled on Mr. Joe Cornish. Best known for his excellent sci-fi comedy Attack The Block, Cornish will direct rising star Jack O'Connell in the film, which follows the "World War I-era formation of British intelligence agency MI6 and its first director, Sir George Mansfield Cummings, who served as the inspiration for M in the James Bond series.”

The search for a director for Universal’s red-hot spy thriller, Section 6, has now come to an end. After looking at names like David MacKenzie and Tom Hooper, the studio has settled on Mr. Joe Cornish. Best known for his excellent sci-fi comedy Attack The Block, Cornish will direct rising star Jack O’Connell in the film, which follows the “World War I-era formation of British intelligence agency MI6 and its first director, Sir George Mansfield Cummings, who served as the inspiration for M in the James Bond series.”

Considering that Universal purchased Aaron Berg’s spec script for $1.2 million, hopes are high that the studio has something special on their hands here. The plot certainly sounds like perfect material for a thrilling tale, and with Cornish and O’Connell now locked in, this one has all the makings of solid British spy film that could very well rival 2011’s near perfect Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

As for casting, we already know that O’Connell will play Cummings’ protege, and apparently, several very high-profile actors are currently circling the role of MI6’s first director. No word yet on who the studio has their eye on but it looks like they want to get moving quickly on this one so it shouldn’t be too long now before we receive some updates.

Tell us, are you pleased to hear that Joe Cornish will direct Section 6? Who do you want to see star as Cummings? Sound off below!
