Though it’s been in development for a while now, the Splinter Cell film is finally moving forward today, as THR reports that Doug Liman has signed on to direct Tom Hardy in the upcoming adaptation.

Based on the very popular Tom Clancy video game series, Splinter Cell will see Hardy in the role of Sam Fisher, a “highly trained” spy who works for a fictional group known as Third Echelon. The various titles in the franchise see Fisher taking on missions that have him travelling the world trying to take down terrorists and prevent “deadly global events.”

Of course, the spy genre is one that Liman knows very well, having directed The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. With a script by American Hustle scribe Eric Singer, all the pieces are here for a compelling spy thriller. New Regency is obviously hoping for a franchise with this one, and it’s not hard to see why. Though almost every video game adaptation to come out of Hollywood thus far has failed miserably, with the talent that’s attached to this particular one, I think that the studio just might get their wish.

Liman, Hardy and Singer make for one exciting trio, and are quite possibly the most impressive group of filmmakers to ever work on a movie based on a video game. All three have excellent track records, and experience with the genre, so as long as someone doesn’t seriously drop the ball, I see no reason why this can’t be the first ever, truly enjoyable video game adaptation.
