True Detective and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang star Michelle Monaghan has joined the upcoming Sony action-comedy, Pixels. She’ll co-star alongside Peter Dinklage, who signed on last week, as well as Adam Sandler, Josh Gad and Kevin James.

Directed by Chris Columbus, Pixels is an adaptation of Patrick Jean’s short film of the same name. If you’re unfamiliar with the original, here’s the plot summary:

Pixels is an adventure film that explores what happens when aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war against them. They begin a war on the human race, using the games as models for their various assaults. The U.S. President (James) turns to his childhood best friend to lead a team of old-school arcaders to save the planet.”

Adam Sandler will play the President’s childhood friend, a former game champion-turned-sad-sack home theater instalment expert, with Dinklage playing his former gaming rival. Gad plays a socially awkward conspiracy theorist, and Monaghan will take the role of Sandler’s love interest, described as a military weapons developer.

So far, Pixels definitely has potential, as both the premise and comparisons to Ghostbusters are very promising. However, with Sandler and James involved, the film runs the risk of turning out like their latest batch of comedies, which quite frankly, have been pathetic. Hopefully Chris Columbus can steer this ship in the right direction and ensure that Pixels lives up to its incredible amount of potential.

Until we hear more though, I’ll remain cautiously optimistic.
